How it works

  1. 1

    Generate

One click rolls a name, what they are, a build and colours, a signature detail, a personality with a quirk, and a style.

  2. 2

    Lock and reroll

Keep the name and the detail, reroll the style. Only the unlocked parts change, so you can iterate until the character clicks.

  3. 3

    Copy or animate

Copy the description into any tool, or send it to the AI cartoon maker and see the character move in your free weekly cartoon.

  4. 4

    Keep them

For a mascot or a series lead, design them in the character creator; paid plans keep them on-model in every Studio scene.

These examples were polished by hand from rolls; the generator itself mixes 40 names, 40 kinds of character, 20 builds, 16 colour pairs, 30 signature details, 24 personalities, 24 quirks and 8 art styles — over a billion combinations — and nothing is stored: characters are generated in your browser.

From a random character to a cartoon

A random character is a starting point, not a finished design. Read the result out loud: if you can picture the silhouette and guess how they would react to a problem, keep it. Lock the name and the signature detail — those are what make a character recognisable — and reroll the build or the style until it fits your idea.

Then give them something to do. One character, one action and one place is the shape of a good 4-second cartoon: “Pip, a nervous baby dragon, tries to pour tea without sneezing sparks, kawaii style.” Send it to the AI cartoon maker, or pair the character with a premise from the cartoon idea generator.

For a recurring character — a mascot, a channel lead, the cast of a series — move to the character creator: on a paid plan it draws a reference sheet (front, three-quarter and side view) that every Studio scene is painted from, so the character stays on-model from one episode to the next.

What makes a cartoon character work

IngredientWhy it matters
A clear silhouetteRecognisable at thumbnail size and in a dark scene
Two or three coloursEasy for an AI model to repeat in every shot
One signature detailA red scarf or a chipped horn is what viewers remember
A wantGives every scene a direction
A flaw or a quirkWhere the jokes and the story come from

The generator builds every character from those five ingredients. How to create AI cartoon characters that stay consistent covers the rest: turnaround sheets, palettes and how to write a character so an AI draws them the same way twice.

Frequently asked questions

Is the random cartoon character generator free?
Yes, completely, and it works without an account. Turning a character into a cartoon video needs a free GenCartoon account — one free cartoon a week.
Does it draw the character?
The generator writes the character: a description ready for an AI model. To see them, send it to the AI cartoon maker, which animates them in a short video with sound, or design them in the character creator, where paid plans draw a full reference sheet.
Can I use the characters I generate?
Yes. Characters are put together in your browser from GenCartoon’s own word lists; use the names and descriptions for stories, channels, classes or games.
Will the character look the same in every video?
On a paid plan, save them in the Character Library and every Studio scene is painted from their reference sheet, which keeps them on-model. Single free cartoons are separate renders, so the look can vary from one clip to the next.
Are the characters kid-friendly?
Yes. Every list — names, kinds, details, personalities and quirks — is written for all ages, so the generator is safe to use in a classroom or for a kids’ channel.
How is this different from the cartoon idea generator?
The cartoon idea generator writes whole premises — a character, a setting, a goal and a twist. This one goes deep on the character: name, build, colours, signature detail, personality, quirk and style.
